Remove My Pictures from the Start Menu

Do you want to removes My Pictures from the Documents folder on the Start Menu? No problem. Follow these steps.

Click Start > Run > type ‘ regedit ‘ to open registry editor.
Find this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\

CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

On the right pane make a new DWORD value, and named it ‘NoSMMyPictures‘ (Right click on empty space on the right pane and choose New >DWORD Value).
Double click that new DWORD value and set the value to ‘1’ to disable it.
Restart the computer.

No more My Pictures from the Documents folder on the Start Menu.

Disable the Ability to Right Click on the Desktop

Disable Recent Documents History

Even this feature looks like simple and harmless, this feature can make records which documents we opened, so if we working on private documents that mean another user can track down on those documents. Of course you can disable this feature, but you also can make this feature enable but not to record anything. Restrict Users from Running Specific Applications

We have more than one applications installed on our computer, and sometimes we also have more than one user. Some applications are not for every users, some applications could be very dangerous in the wrong hand, so we have to do something about this. Yes we can restrict users from running specific applications. Follow these steps to make it happen.

Click Start > Run and type ‘ regedit ‘ to open registry editor.
Find this key from left pane:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\

CurrentVersion \Policies\Explorer

Create a new DWORD value and name it "DisallowRun" set the value to "1" to enable application restrictions or "0" to allow all applications to run. Right click on the right pane > New > DWORD Value.
Then create a new sub-key called [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion \Policies\Explorer\DisallowRun] and define the applications to be restricted. Create a new string value for each application, named as consecutive numbers, and setting the value to the filename to be restricted. To create a new sub-key called DisallowRun, right click on the key Explorer then choose New > Key, named it DisallowRun. Now to make string value to restrict applications, click on new key you just created ‘DisallowRun’ from the left pane, then point your mouse to right pane on empty space and right click then choose New > String Value, named it as consecutive number (named it ‘1’ then the next string value named it ‘2’). Double click on that string value and then put application’s name that you want to restrict (if you want to restrict notepad then type in ‘ notepad.exe ‘ ), for each application that you want to restrict you have to make a new string value.
Close registry editor, and try to run an application that you restricted before. You’ll get a warning message.

Note: Don’t restrict regedit, you can’t disable this feature if you restrict regedit.

Floppy disk startup key.

Usually we use an application to lockup our computer, and then next time we startup, we need to plug in a flash disk as a security key. Windows XP provides us with easy and cheap way to do this, all we need is little bit of information how to do this and a blank floppy disk. Here how we can do this.

Click Start > Run > type ‘ syskey ‘ this will open a window named ‘Securing the Windows XP Account Database’
Choose ‘ Encryption Enabled ‘
Click Update button. A window called Startup Key will popup.
Choose ‘ System Generated Password ‘, and then choose ‘ Store Startup Key on Floppy Disk ‘.
Insert your blank floppy disk to create your floppy disk key. Click Ok button.

Make a copy of your floppy disk to make a backup. Enjoy ...

No recycle files.

Customize minimum password length.

This could be useful if security is an issue in your computer. We can force Windows to reject passwords that do not meet a minimum password length. To set this up follow this steps :

Click Start > Run > type ‘ regedit ‘ to open your Registry Editor.
Find this key from right pane:

CurrentVersion\Policies\Network

If the ‘ Network ‘ sub-key does not already exist then create it (right click on ‘ Policies ‘ choose New and then Key, named it Network.
Create a new binary value named 'MinPwdLen', and set the data to the minimum number of characters required for a password to be accepted.

This does not apply to existing passwords, only new or changed. Don’t forget to backup your registry before make some changes.

Put this string in search box:

The -inurl htm and -inul html is attempting to get rid of regular webpages and show just index pages. Looking for index of in the title is doing the same. Using the pipe ( | ) tells google to look for something OR something else. Here we are telling Google to look for book or ebook directories... and we have listed several common ebook formats (zip, pdf, chf).

Strikeout and underline in Notepad.

Notepad is capable to underline and strikeout your texts, but this feature can’t be found from menu. To do this you have to make some change in your registry. Don’t forget to backup your registry before you make some changes. Follow these steps to do this.

Click Start > Run > type ‘ regedit ‘ to open your Registry Editor.
In the left pane find this path:

Googling MP3s, WMAs, OGGs, and Other Music Files

The purpose of sharing this tip is not to support music piracy, but for education only. Here how I googling music:

Open Google search engine and then put this string in search box:

Hit search button.

Using this string we are using the "index of" and the inurl commands to attempt to isolate directories only. The mp3 tag on the end tells Google to look for mp3s in these open directories. You can change this to wma or ogg if you wish.

Treat .bin, .cue, *.iso as virtual CD or DVD without burning them.

You can save your blank CD and your blank DVD and finally save your money if you learn this one. I got a lot of *.bin, *.cue, *.iso from the net, before learn this I always burn those file in CD or DVD to be able to open those file, but now I never need CD or DVD to open those file. Don’t know about those file, here a little information for you: those file extensions are commonly used to show that a file is an image of a CD or DVD. The simplest way to access these files is to use your CD or DVD Burner to burn them to a disk. Nero is a common program that is used to burn bin/cue files to hard media.

If you don’t want to burn those files in CD and DVD than you can use a program to make virtual drive in your computer, and after that you can load those file in virtual drive and then open those file just like open CD or DVD. I personally used ‘Daemon Tool’ and ‘Nero’ as programs that provide me virtual drives. You can search internet for Daemon Tool, and the good news is this program is free.

To make you an advance user here other good things to know:
You can force the calculator to try and evaluate an expression by putting an equals sign (=) after it. This only works if the expression is mathematically resolvable. For example, 1-800-555-1234= will return a result, but 1/0= will not.

Parentheses can be used to enclose the parts of your expression that you want evaluated first. For example, (1+2)*3 causes the addition to happen before the multiplication.

The in operator is used to specify what units you want used to express the answer. Put the word in followed by the name of a unit at the end of your expression. This works well for unit conversions such as: 5 kilometers in miles.

You can use hexadecimal, octal and binary numbers. Prefix hexadecimal numbers with 0x, octal numbers with 0o and binary numbers with 0b. For example: 0x7f + 0b10010101.

The calculator understands many different units, as well as many physical and mathematical constants. These can be used in your expression. Many of these constants and units have both long and short names. You can use either name in most cases. For example, km and kilometer both work, as do c and the speed of light.

Enable Disk Quotas.

Your hard drive must be formatted with NTFS to be able to use disk quota. This is the right tip if you are an administrator, and you want to restrict used of hard disk volume for your user. Disk Quotas are based on file ownership (which means that it counts against the one who owns it). Follow these steps to enable disk quotas:

Open My Computer and right-click the hard drive you wish to enable the feature on.
Select Properties.
Click the Quota tab.
Check the Enable quota management checkbox.
Check the Deny disk space to users exceeding their quota limit checkbox. This will cause the user to receive an insufficient disk space error their space limit is exceeded.
Select the Limit disk space to radio button.
Set the amount of disk space to be allocated to the user.
Enter value for the Set warning level to option.
Click OK.

Reset Windows Media Player File Associations.

We have a lot of different media file, like mpeg, mp3, avi, midi. First time you install Window XP, the default file player is Window Media Player, then later on you also install different media player. If you have lost the file associations for Windows Media Player (WMP) and WMP no longer plays your music or video files, and you want make WMP as your default media player again follow these steps:

Open Windows Media Player.
Select Tools Options.
Click the File Types tab.
Click Select All, note: if you want to specify only some file associate with WMP then make sure you give a check mark on each file that you want to associate with WMP.
Click Apply.
Click OK.

Hide Control Panel from Start menu.

I don’t like it, if another user change my computer setting especially when that changes cause error on my computer and in the end still I have to fix that problems. Control Panel is one way to change our computer setting, before I learned this trick I always wonder if I can hide Control Panel, that would be very helpful for me, since my computer used by more than 2 person and some of them have administrator account. Disable low disk space warning.

Make file list from directory.

You could use this to make list of your mp3 files, jpg files, and then you can edit it or maybe print it. Steps:

Click Start > Run > type ‘cmd’. This will open Command Prompt window.
Go to folder that you want to make list (type ‘ cd ‘).
Type ‘ dir >files.txt ‘. This will create .txt file contains your folder list, you can open this file with notepad or another word processor.
You can use wildcard to make restriction( ex :‘dir *.jpg >files.txt ‘ This will create list of files with .jpg extension).

You can open or edit files.txt with notepad or maybe MS Word.

Detect and clean up junk drivers.

We installed so many different hardware in our computer, some of them we don’t use it anymore, and driver of that device still reside in your computer, this could trigger potential problem. Here how to detect them and remove these junk drivers:

Click Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > System. This will open System Properties window.
Click Advanced tab > Environment Variables button. This will open Environment Variables window.
Make new entry in System variables section (click New button in System variables section). This will open New System Variable window.
Type in ‘ devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices ‘ in Variable name, and for Variable value type in ‘1’. Click Ok button (New System Variable window). Click Ok button ( Environment Variables window).
Back to System Properties window, click Hardware tab > click Device Manager button. This will open Device Manager window.
Click View > Show hidden devices, devices that we don’t use anymore will showed with transparent icons. You can uninstall them now(Right click on it and choose Uninstall).

Activated warning for system folder.

If you open system folder (Windows folder) for the first time, Windows will show a warning. You can see folder content after you click ‘Show folder’ or ‘Show the whole content of this folder’, but after your first click Windows will deactivate this feature, and next time you open this folder there will be no warning again. You can activate this warning again if you want, follow these steps to do this:

Click Start > Run > type ‘regedit’ > click Ok button. This will open Registry Editor window.
From left pane find this path:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\

CurrentVersion\Explorer\WebView\BarricadeFolders

From right pane find entry ‘shell:Windows’. Double click that entry and change its value from 0 to 1. If you change this entry, warning will showed if you open Windows main folder.
You can change entry ‘shell:System’, if you want warning showed when you open System32 folder. Double click that entry and change its value from 0 to 1.
Close your Registry Editor.

Now try to open Windows folder, Windows will show a warning.

Protect your data every time you shutdown your computer.

Applications always write it’s data in temporary file, sometimes that data is very important data like password. After you shut down your computer, that data still reside in your temporary file, and using specific applications people can collect and read your data.

To prevent this happened you can set up your Windows XP to delete temporary file every time you shut down your computer, but of course this will take a little bit time and make your shut down time longger. Follow these steps to do this:

Click Start > Run > type ‘regedit’. This will open Registry Editor window.
Find this path from left pane:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\

Session Manager\MemoryManagement

Double click ‘ClearPageAtShutdown’ (right pane).
Change it’s value form 0 to 1. If you can’t find ‘ClearPageAtShutdown’ then make a new one (click Edit > New > Dword Value).
Close Registry Editor window, restart your computer.

No more unread email message from logon screen.

Here steps to disable unread email message:

Click Start > Run > type ‘regedit’. This will open Registry Editor window.
From left pane find path :

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\

CurrentVersion\UnreadMail

On the right pane you’ll see entry ‘MessageExpiryDays’ if you can’t find it, make a new one (Click Edit > New > Dword value).
Double click on that entry (from No.3), type in value 0, confirm with Ok button.
Close your Registry Editor window and restart your computer.

Take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP.

To take ownership of a folder you must be logged on to the computer with an account that has administrative credentials. If you are running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, you must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an account that

has Administrative rights to have access to the Security tab. If you are using Windows XP Professional, you must disable Simple File Sharing.

To take ownership of a folder, follow these steps:

Right-click the folder that you want to take ownership of, and then click Properties.
Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message (if one appears).
Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.
In the Name list, click your user name, or click Administrator if you are logged in as Administrator, or click the Administrators group. If you want to take ownership of the contents of that folder, select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box.
Click OK, and then click Yes when you receive the following message: 'You do not have permission to read the contents of directory folder name. Do you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you Full Control?' All permissions will be replaced if you press Yes. Note folder name is the name of the folder that you want to take ownership of.
Click OK, and then reapply the permissions and security settings that you want for the folder and its contents.

To take ownership of a file you must be logged on to the computer with an account that has administrative credentials. Follow these steps:

Right-click the file that you want to take ownership of, and then click Properties.
Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message (if one appears).
Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.
In the Name list, click Administrator, or click the Administrators group, and then click OK. The administrator or the Administrators group now owns the file. To change the permissions on the files and folders under this folder, go to step 5.
Click Add.
In the Enter the object names to select (examples) list, type the user or group account that you want to give access to the file. For example, type Administrator.
Click OK.
In the Group or user names list, click the account that you want, and then select the check boxes of the permissions that you want to assign that user.
When you are finished assigning permissions, click OK.

Disable simplified sharing and set permissions on a shared folder in Windows XP.

By default, simple file sharing is enabled on a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer if the computer is not a member of a domain. With simple file sharing, you can share folders with everyone on your workgroup or network and make folders in your user profile private. However, if simple file sharing is enabled, you cannot prevent specific users and groups from accessing your shared folders. If you turn off simple file sharing, you can permit specific users and groups to access a shared folder. Those users must be logged on with the credentials of user accounts that you have granted access to your shared folder.

If simple file sharing is enabled, you see the simple file sharing user interface appears instead of the Security and Sharing tabs. By default, this new user interface is implemented in Windows XP Home Edition and in Microsoft Windows XP Professional if you are working in a workgroup. If you turn off simple file sharing, the classic Security and Sharing tabs appear, and you can specify which users and groups have access to shared folders on your computer.

To disable simple file sharing, follow these steps:

Click Start, and then click My Computer.
On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
In the Advanced Settings section, clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box.
Click OK.

To share a folder or a drive with other users, follow these steps:

Click Start, click My Computer, and then locate the folder or drive that you want to share.
Right-click the folder or drive, and then click Sharing and Security.
On the Sharing tab, click Share this folder.
To change the share name of the shared folder or drive, type a new name in the Share name box. Other users see the new name when they connect to this shared folder or drive. The actual name of the folder or drive does not change.
To add a comment about the shared folder or drive, type the text in the Comment box.
To limit the number of people who can connect to the shared folder or drive at the same time, click Allow under User limit, and then type the number of users.
To set share permissions on the shared folder or drive, click Permissions.

Note To share folders and drives, you must be logged on as a member of any one of the following groups:

•Administrators

•Server Operators

•Power Users

Click OK.

Change drive letter assignments in Windows XP.

Our computer can use up to 26 drive letters, from A through Z. Use drive letters C through Z for hard disk drives. Drive letters A and B are reserved for floppy disk drives. However, if your computer does not have a floppy disk drive, you can assign these letters to removable drives. To assign a drive letter:

Log on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Performance and Maintenance.
Note If you do not see Performance and Maintenance, go to step 3. Performance and Maintenance appears in Control Panel only if you use Category view. If you use Classic view, Performance and Maintenance does not appear.
Click Administrative Tools, double-click Computer Management, and then click Disk Management in the left pane.
Right-click the drive, the partition, the logical drive, or the volume that you want to assign a drive letter to, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths.
Click Add.
Click Assign the following drive letter if it is not already selected, and then either accept the default drive letter or click the drive letter that you want to use.
Click OK.

Use Windows Explorer to locate the Winexit.scr file in the Windows 2000 Resource Kit folder on your hard disk.
Right-click the Winexit.scr file, and then click Install.
The Display Properties dialog box appears with the Screen Saver tab active. The Logoff Screen Saver entry is automatically selected. Click Settings.
Select the Force application termination check box to force programs to quit.
In the Countdown for n seconds box, type the number of seconds for which the logoff dialog box appears before the user is logged off.
In the Logoff Message box, type the message that appears during the logoff countdown. Click OK.
In the Display Properties dialog box, click Preview.
You see the Auto Logoff dialog box. It displays the logoff message and the countdown timer. Click Cancel.
Click OK.

Delete an undeletable file.

Delete a file is an easy task, but sometimes when we want to delete a file, we can’t do it with regular way. Here how we can delete that kind of file:

Open a Command Prompt window and leave it open.
Close all open programs. Click Start, Run and enter TASKMGR.EXE Go to the Processes tab and End Process on Explorer.exe. Leave Task Manager open.
Go back to the Command Prompt window and change to the directory where is that file located. At the command prompt type DEL where is the file you wish to delete.
Go back to Task Manager, click File, New Task and enter EXPLORER.EXE to restart the GUI shell. Close Task Manager.

Use multiple monitors in Windows XP

If you think one monitor is not enough for you, and you need more space in your desktop. Then learn this one to satisfy your need. To configure the arrangement of multiple monitors:

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Click Appearance and Themes, and then click Display.
On the Settings tab, click Identify to display a large number on each of your monitors. This shows which monitor corresponds with each icon.
Click the monitor icons and drag them to positions that represent how you want to move items from one monitor to another, and then click OK or Apply to view changes.

NOTE: The icon positions determine how you move items from one monitor to another. For example, if you are using two monitors and you want to move items from one monitor to the other by dragging left and right, place the icons side by side. To move items between monitors by dragging up and down, place the icons one above the other. The icon positions do not have to correspond to the physical positions of the monitors. You can place the icons one above the other even though your monitors are side by side.

To change primary monitor:

On the Settings tab of the Display Properties dialog box, click the monitor icon that represents the monitor you want to designate as the primary monitor.
Click to select the Use this device as the primary monitor check box. Note that this check box is unavailable when you select the monitor icon that is currently set as your primary monitor.

To view same desktop in multiple monitors:

On the Settings tab of the Display Properties dialog box, click the monitor icon that represents the monitor you want to use in addition to your primary monitor.
Click to select the Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor check box. After you enable this feature, you can drag items across your screen onto alternate monitors. Or, you can resize a window to stretch it across more than one monitor.

To move items between monitors:

Manually Remove Programs from the Add/Remove Programs List.

We don’t like if something goes wrong and we don’t how to fix it, but things happened. When you uninstall a program and that program still listed in Add/Remove Programs List, maybe this can help you. Follow these steps:

Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then press ENTER.
Locate and click the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows \CurrentVersion \Uninstall.
After you click the Uninstall registry key, click Export Registry File on the Registry menu.
In the Export Registry File dialog box, click Desktop in the Save in box, type uninstall in the File name box, and then click Save.
Each key under Uninstall represents a program that appears in Add/Remove Programs. To determine which program that each key represents, click the key, and then view the following values:

DisplayName - the value data for the DisplayName key is the name that is listed in Add/Remove Programs
-and-
UninstallString - the value data for the UninstallString key is the program that is used to uninstall the program

After you identify the registry key that represents the program that is still in Add/Remove Programs, right-click the key, and then click Delete.
After you delete the key, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
In Add/Remove Programs, verify that the program for which you deleted the registry key is not listed.
If the program list is not correct in Add/Remove Programs, you can double-click the Uninstall.reg file on your desktop to restore the original list of programs in the registry.
If the program list is correct in Add/Remove Programs, you can right-click the Uninstall.reg file on your desktop, and then click Delete.

Right click My Computer. Select Properties then click on the Advanced tab.
Next click Settings under Startup and Recovery. Click Edit.
You'll need to edit this file "BOOT.INI" Add '/SOS' right after /fastdetect with a space between them. The line should look something like this :multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows="Microsoft Windows Professional" /fastdetect /SOS

After you restart, the splash screen should be gone! You can set it back by removing the /SOS switch

Make auto shutdown with shortcut.

You can find free auto shutdown applications on the net, but your Windows XP has this feature too. If you want to make your own then follow these steps:

Make a new shortcut on your desktop, don’t know how to make new shortcut, read on bloggers. Right click on empty area of your desktop, choose New and then Shortcut. This will open Create Shortcut wizard window. Now type ‘ shutdown –s –t 3600 –c “Maintenance” ‘. Click Next and then give a name for your new shortcut, Click Finish.
The number ‘3600’ is the number for countdown in second, so you can give your own number here (just change the number). If you don’t want to display any message then delete this part ‘ –c “Maintenance” ‘. If you want to change the message then just change this part “Maintenance” with your own message.
After you create a shutdown shortcut, you can make it prettier. How ? ... Easy, just right click on that shortcut and then choose Properties. Then under Shortcut tab, click Change Icon.. button and then choose better icon.

You also can make a shortcut to cancel your shutdown, here how:

Follow step 1, but this time type ‘ shutdown –a’, the next steps just same steps.

Important:

To do this you have to have in your machine the file shutdown.exe placed on c:\windows\system32\ or the program don't work, you have also to be administrator

Restricting a users Logon hours.

If you have a network system then you can restrict a users logon hours with ‘net user’ command. Pay attention to these examples, and you will know how to use it :

net user john /time:M-F,08:00-17:00
net user larry /time:M-F,8am-5pm
net user angel /time:M,4am-5pm;T,1pm-3pm;W-F,8:00-17:00
net user mike /time:all (this one means this user can always log on)

Note:You can only restrict when a user can log on to the system. On a stand alone computer, there is no way, currently, to force a user to log off when their hours expire.

This will create a custom window with message, everytime you log off from your computer. Backup your registry before you do this (for safety purpose). Steps:

Click Start > Run, type “regedit” click Ok button. Registry Editor window will popup.
Find this path from left side of Registry Editor window: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Double click LegalNoticeCaption from right side Registry Editor window. This will popup Edit String window. Type in Value data any name that you want to be your message window title. Click Ok button.
Double click LegalNoticeText from right side Registry Editor window. This will popup Edit String window. Type in Value data any message, this message will show up on your message window. Click Ok button. Close your Registry Editor window.
Log off from your computer.

Rename your recycle bin.

Backup your registry, if you want to do this, because you’re going to change some of your registry value. So if something wrong happened you can undo this by restore your registry. If you don’t know how to backup your registry, then try to search my blog with blog search engine (look at the top, you can’t miss it). Follow these steps to make your Windows XP’s recycle bin looks different:

Click Start > Run and then type “regedit”. This will open Registry Editor window.
Find this path (from the left side Registry Editor window): HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08 -00AA002F954E}
Double click on (Default), on the right side Registry Editor window. This will open Edit String window, and then type in your new name for your recycle bin in the Value data, then click Ok button.
Double click on LocalizedString, on the right side Registry Editor window.This will open Edit String window, and then type in your new name for your recycle bin in the Value data (make sure you type same name that you typed in No.3), then click Ok button, close your Registry Editor window.
Point your mouse pointer in empty area of your Desktop, right click and choose Refresh, you should see your new recycle bin now.

Need to leave your XP workstation in 1 second? Follow these steps to do this:

Create a new shortcut on your desktop (right click on empty area of your desktop and then choose New > Shortcut). This will open Create Shortcut wizard.
Type “rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation” in the location field.
Click Next, and give a name to your new shortcut, click Finish.

Create a password reset disk in Windows XP.

I know that you always remember your password, but in case of someone or your wife hit your head because you spent too much time on your computer and you don’t remember your password anymore ..... here help from Microsoft.

To create a floppy diskette to recover your password follows these steps:

Click Start > Control Panel > User Accounts.
Click on the account which you want to create a password disk.
Click Prevent a forgotten password which starts the Forgotten Password Wizard . This is found under Related Tasks.
Insert a blank, formatted disk into your floppy drive , and click Next.
Enter the password in the Current user account password box.

To use the recovery disk, at the Welcome screen

Click the user name whose password is on the recovery disk.
Click the question mark button.
Click use your password reset disk.
This will start the Password Reset Wizard.
Just follow the wizard's instructions and you will be able to set a new password.

Do you know if Windows XP uses 20% of your bandwidth? By default Windows XP reserve your bandwidth by 20%, so that mean you only have 80% of your bandwidth. If 80% is not big enough for you, you can follow these steps to override the default setting.

Click Start > Run, then type “gpedit.msc”. This will open Group Policy window.
Click Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Network > QOS Packet Scheduler.
Double click Limit reservable bandwidth on the right side of Group Policy window. This will popup Limit reservable bandwidth Properties window. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the Explain tab.
So the trick is to enable reservable bandwidth (choose Enable radio button), then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%. After that click Apply button, and Ok button.

Backup and restore Windows XP registry.

We can make our Windows XP different and more fun, one way to make that happen is change the registry value, but don’t forget changing registry value can be very dangerous. It can make your system crash if you don’t know what are you doing. Here I want to share how to backup registry and then how to restore registry to undo registry value changes that you made if something goes wrong.

To backup:

Click Start > Run and type “regedit”, click Ok button. This will popup Registry Editor window.
Click File > Export, choose a location to save registry file and type in File name. Don't forget to choose All (for all value registry) or Selected branch(for your own selected registry value) in Export Range section. Click Save button.

To restore:

Click Start > Run and type “regedit”, click Ok button. This will popup Registry Editor window.
Click File > Import, choose a location where you saved your registry file and choose a registry file. Click Open button.

Windows XP’s Virtual Memory

As far as I know, a paging file that Windows uses as if it were RAM called Virtual Memory. A paging file it self is an area on the hard disk. Usually a paging file is locate on drive C. How about if drive C is full? You can delete or uninstall some program on drive C to make some space, but if you don’t want to do one of those, these steps will guide you to use another drive as your virtual memory.

Right click on My Computer > Properties. Choose Advanced tab on System Properties window.
Click Settings button under Performance section, this will popup Performance Options window. Choose Advanced tab.
Click Change button under Virtual memory section, this will popup Virtual memory window.
Now on this window you can setup drive for virtual memory (under Drive section), custom your paging file size (under Paging file size for selected drive section) or let the system manage the size (choose System managed size radio button).
Click Set button and Ok button when you have done.
Click Apply button and Ok button on Performance Option window.
Click Ok button on System Properties window.
Restart your computer.

Reactivate .DLL file.

After installing a new software or application, sometimes we got an error message that tells us about missing .dll file. As long as we still have that missing file, we can reactivate that file. First you have to search that missing .dll file in your computer, if you can find it than you can go on. This method works under Windows ME, 2000, and XP. Here how to reactivate that .dll file:

Click Start > Run and type “ regsvr32(space)(name_dll)” > Ok.

Shortcut keys for shortcut icons.

I have so many programs installed on my computer, and of course I also have so many shortcut icons on my desktop. Sometimes I got problem to find a program shortcut that I want to run, sound funny huh .... but it really happened to me. Well, if you have same problem with me or maybe just want to have fun with your computer here the steps to assign shortcut keys for shortcut icons:

Right click on shortcut icon that you want to assign shortcut key, choose Properties. This will popup new window named “’Your application name’ Properties”.
Click on Shortcut tab, find “Shortcut key:”,default value is “None”.
Assign a letter to Shortcut key, value will change depend on letter you assigned (ex: if you assigned letter a then you’ll see Ctrl + Alt + A). Now you can just hit Ctrl + Alt + A to run the program.
If you want to assign a number not a letter then you have to hit Ctrl + Alt + “number you want”.
Click on Apply button, and then Ok button.

Now no more hide and seek to run a program.

Save your ink, save your money. Sometimes we need to print web pages, background consumes more ink and of course consumes more money, but if you want to print the background then that will be ok for you. This tip only for people who want to save their ink and their money.

For Internet Explorer :

Click on Tools > Internet Options. This will popup Internet Option window.
Choose Advanced tab, look for Printing section. Make sure Print background colors and images uncheck.
Click Apply button, and then Ok button.

For Firefox:

Click on File > Page Setup. This will popup Page Setup window.
In Options section, make sure you uncheck Print Background (colors & images).
Click Ok button.

If you want to print background then just follow steps above but this time make sure you check Print background colors and images for Internet Explorer and check Print Background (colors & images) for Firefox.

Disable CD-ROM Auto Run Service

Put in your CD inside your CD-ROM and your computer automatically read that CD. Some of us don’t like if our computer behave like that. You can disable this service. These steps will change your registry value, so always backup your registry before make any change. Follow these steps to disable CD-ROM Auto Run Service:

Click Start, Run. Type “regedit”. This step will open Registry Editor.
Find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > CurrentControlSet > Services > Cdrom.
On the right side window of Registry Editor double click on Auto Run. This will popup small window.
Change Value data to 0, click Ok button, close Registry Editor and Restart Your Computer.

Most people don’t care about their Recycle Bin, but some people want bigger or maybe smaller Recycle Bin. “Size does matter “ that’s what they said. Here how to increase or decrease your size:

On the popup window you can setup your size, even for each drive you have. Default is set up to 10%. Also delete confirmation dialog can be disable or enable here.

Since Firefox is an open source web browser then you can setup your browser anyway you like.
These setting will speed up your firefox, before you make any change just remember what is the default setting, so if anything goes wrong just put back the default setting.
Follow these steps bloggers:

Type “about:config” di Addresse bar (URL) and hit Enter.
Change values of these parameters:

browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs – true

network.http.max-connections – 64

network.http.max-connections-per-server – 20

network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy – 10
