Start up without needing to enter a user name or password.

Tired of typing your password and user name? then follow these steps to get your Windows XP ready for you without typing anything.
  1. Click Start > Run and then type “control userpasswords2 “, Click Ok button. This will popup User Accounts window.
  2. On the Users tab, clear the box for Users must enter a user name and password to
use this computer, and click Apply button. An Automatically Log On dialog box will appear, enter the user name and password for the account you want to use, click Ok button.
  3. Restart your computer to try it.

If you try this on a number of XP systems, you will find that some have the "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" checkbox and others do not. I have not found a reason for the difference. There are no answers from Microsoft as to why this happens, but http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315231 tells how to edit the registry to do the same thing if the checkbox is not present.
